The Glass is Half Full!

Good Morning:                            Thursday 4/28/16

Do you ever need a good laugh?  Last Sunday afternoon at the winery, traffic was slow and I thought it'd be a good time to do a little filming to promote our Mother's Day Event.  It started more serious and ended with belly laughing.  Then this morning I realized that the six videos actually have wine pairing capability.  Follow the sequence below, know that no phone apps were used, this is all unmodified on the fly filming, I like to call it red neck filming.

1. The first video pairs with our Frontenac wine called "Rona."  A dry red wine that pairs with spicy foods you savor.

2. This video pairs with "What the Foch", between lighter whites and heavier reds.Becky only agreed to sing as a duo.

3. For this video, Tom refused to sing, so I said no problem.  I can sing for you.  The wine pairing is Schnickelfritz, meaning rascal or trouble maker.

4. After this things got wild, Dana then videoed.  The wine paring, Nordsüss. Made to pair with dark chocolate, Fruit forward tones are what you get.

5. This next video has to be paired with "Gemütlichkeit", meaning Good Times in German.  Matt did a wonderful job.

6. Lastly is my wife, Mary's video.  I pair her with our Ruby Port called "Papo".  a very stiff drink, Great with dark chocolate.

Don't miss our Mother's Day Buffet plus more!

Now for the winner of last week's trivia question.  Does anyone known what these lawn circles are from?

The correct answer is "Fairy Rings". the rings are caused by mushrooms that grow in circles. The mushrooms "fix" nitrogen the greens up the grass - same as using lawn fertilizer, only in circles.   And the winner of a free bottle of Millner Heritage wine is Al Gilmer.  Congratulations!

As always, Thank you for our time and have a wonderful week.

The Glass is Half Full!

Good Evening:                            Thursday 4/21/16

Do you ever have where your daytime activity gets into your dreams?  Yesterday I had to re-lube a PTO shaft on a mower, got my hands all greasy and stained dirty and then had the dream I was back doing dentistry.  Had my old staff, different building, and nothing for working material were in the correct places.  I completed 3 or 4 patients and then remembered that I am now longer licensed or insured. I awoke with the Oh my gosh feeling.

  ______________________________________________________________________

I believe it is time to give away a bottle of line.  Look at the photos below.  Does anyone known what these lawn circles are from?  To enter send you answer to donmillner@gmail.com with the subject line of "Circle invasion from Mars!"  The winner will be drawn from the correct answers.  If you are the only one, easy bottle of wine.  (M.H. workers and family exempt.)

Thank you for your time and have a nice weekend.

Doubleheader Events at the Winery!

Greetings Readers!

Jon, Anna, and Iza have returned safely from Hungary! Hopefully Queen Iza will maintain her ruling authority on American soil. Please show your support for Queen Iza by purchasing a gum-ball from her gum-ball machine next time you stop in :)

As many of you know, we had a new cider come out this past fall called Sechs in a bottle.
Now, you can get Sechs in a can!

(Only joking; if you implemented this you would have too much fun).

In non-joking matters, we have our third cider coming out this summer. Our label was just approved and it is my honor to present you with....(drumroll)...

Attila The Fun's Fruit Bubbly for the ages

Look for Him in liquor stores near you! Ask for him at your local bar as well!

UP-TO-BAT:

May 8th: Mother's Day Buffet
May 21st: Case Club Appreciation Dinner

This past week was our beloved Twins home opener. Did you know baseball and MN made Millner Heritage wines & ciders are the perfect pairing? Did you also know that 2 is better than 1? If you're a case club member than you would know that 12 is actually the best number.

Call in your reservation for BOTH events at ONE time!

The Glass is Half Full!

Good Morning:                            Friday 4/15/16

Yes spring is in the air. Yesterday I work most of the day outside at home.  We have some newly planted grass that is now taking off, a little rain would really pop it event more.  If you think of spring as a time of renewal and life bouncing back from the dormancy of winter, Mary and I had a touching phone call on Wednesday.  One of my brother-in-laws called to offer his condolences, for half a second I didn't understand.  Then I remembered, Wednesday April 13th was 37 years since our first child, Lisa Monique Millner, died.  She died 6 weeks old from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. (SIDS) Mary and I felt really honored to receive the call that someone still remembers, even though we ourselves had forgotten on Wednesday.  Below is a photo of Lisa Monique, brother Scott with Lisa's lamb, and a link to info on SIDS. Another memory of Lisa Monique,  our newest granddaughter is also Lisa Millner.  Thank you.  Click here for more info.

Tuesday was a very happy day for us, Jon, Anna, and Iza arrived home from their almost month long visit to Anna's family in Hungary.  It was really good to see them safely home.  Iza brought almost a suite case full of chocolate home.  We tested it and really good, now she is back to school.

_______________________________________________________________________

Above we have Mother's Day and another Case Club Party advertised and you know the question becomes which one do you go to?  Mary and I are now married for 41 years and she has often asked me the same question, this or that.  Well, all I can say is that you only live once, I say go to both events!!

Thank you for your time and have a wonderful weekend with your family.                               Don Millner

Hello Millner Newsletter Readers!

Jon, Anna and Iza are suppose to be returning next week from Hungary. However, when I was looking at their vacation pictures on Facebook I saw that Iza had claimed the crown. I'm sure she had some help from Attila the Fun (our new cider to be released this summer). Now we will have to make a new honorary wine and name it Queen Iza.

Good Evening:                            Thursday 4/7/16

The photo of the week below is actually the winery version of:  "Tie the Yellow Ribbon around the Old Oak Tree."  Well it isn't an oak tree and that is not a yellow ribbon.  It is what a windy day in MN can do when someone that looks a lot like me, leaves a 400 ft. roll of caution tape in the back of the John Deere Gator.  The wind sucked it out and wrapped all over the place.

     ___________________________________________________________________________

Tuesday night five of us went out eating Mexican in Litchfield.  Phil, our vineyard guy, wholesale guy, and store guy, looked really good with a sombrero on  with the mustache and Napoleon pose.  Speaking of mustache, it is almost a month now since Jon, Anna, & Iza left for Hungary; since then I have been growing my mustache out.  I thought it might be time to show those young guys what a real mustache is like.  Soon I will be ready to start waxing.

     ________________________________________________________________

You know that when the cat's away the mice will play.  Last Tuesday we had a staff meeting without Jon, finally we covered a subject that Jon never gets covered.  For an 1 1/2 hours we did singing practice.  The night before I read-up on what to do to improve your singing ability.  The first recommendation was to do proper breathing and the second was to drink plenty of fluids; we had cider by the pitcher.  We had plenty of fun and I think it helped everyone.  While we were practicing, Jon called and talked with Mary for quite a while.  Iza got on the phone and told Grandma that she was home-sick.  As I always say, they must have had a vacation because home will really look good.

Summer Hours Have Arrived!

Good Morning oh Most Beautiful Readers!

It is officially April according to my galaxy cat calendar hanging on my wall:

April means that we will be receiving showers to bring May flowers.

It also means that our winery will be open not only on Saturday and Sunday, but also on Thursday and Friday!

The Glass is Half Full!

Good Morning:                            Saturday 4/2/16

Yes it is a little cold today, you can blame me.  This cooler weather is good for the grapes.  It slows down the process for the buds to open.  Buds open too early + frost = little to no crop, that's farming.

Two days ago I had an epiphany.  We have a little problem in that people think we are closed for the winter.  We just completed our first winter of being open Saturday and Sunday, this now means that we are also open Saturday and Sunday year-round. You can come 12 months of the year and drink with us, whoopee!  Plus 9 months of the year Thursday to Sunday.

On Wednesday evening I baked an out of our freezer pizza.  As I was cutting it with a scissors I thought his sure is a cardboard pizza.  When it came time to eat, it sure was a cardboard pizza, right from the first bite.

Forgot to take cardboard  out before baking.

Forgot to take cardboard  out before baking.

Above you've already read that for Mother's Day we are serving Baby Back-Ribs.  What the heck are Baby Back-Ribs?  First, I want to assure you that no baby pigs will be harmed in the preparation of this meal.  My dad really loved raising hogs and he frowned upon someone butchering a pig that was just over 100 lbs.  Once you got the pig to grow the first half of its size, the second 100 lbs. was easy to do.  (Like the first half is the bigger half.)

Not knowing what baby back-ribs are, I googled and found the answer.  This cut of ribs are from the upper part of the rib cage next to the spinal column.  Varying from 3 to 6 inches, they tend to be more meaty and yummy to eat.

Thank you for reading today and have a wonderful weekend.

Don

The Glass is Half Full!

Good Afternoon:                            Friday 3/25/16

Well this week was not my normal week.  Last Monday we celebrated our youngest son, Scott, his 30th birthday.  Really nice big meal cooked by our Phil Yungk, Phil works  our vineyard, wholesale wine, our store, and helps with the production side.  He did steak, shark steak, and  kabobs with shrimp and mushrooms, etc.  This was all at Shawn and Heather's house; the food was all really good, I ate OK but just wasn't quite right.

That night got home and boom hit  with the chest flu.  Went to doctor on Tuesday, thought maybe pneumonia; she commented that I hadn't gotten a flu shot. So I am still recovering just from the flu.  The recovery is really slow, gives me cabin fever.  I am getting close to done with this, I've never had this before. This is what the little bugger looks like!

virus3.jpg

As you know, some weeks are like this.  Mary, my wife, says that I always move at 90 mph, well this week I have been doing a lot of 30 mph.

Don't miss our last day of Free 5-Wines tasting this Sunday.  We can be your Easter dessert.

Lastly, Jon, Anna, and Iza are doing good in Hungary.  Since the bombing in Brussels this week, the only difference he has noticed is the sound of more police cars.  They should be good, yet we watch for their safe return.

Thank you for your time and have a good Easter weekend.

Don

Millner Wine <3's Food

This past week I paired Sesame Noodles with Salier. If you haven't tried our Salier yet, let me first say that it is named after the ship the Millner's sailed over on from the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1882.

With that being said, this medium bodied semi-sweet white will take your palate on an adventure! Its unique complexity carries a broad spectrum of citrus notes on one end and then balances with more gentle fruits such as pear and apricot on the other. A simple dish like Sesame Noodles is a great pairing to compliment this wine.

Andrea the Wine Student

Last weekend I drove down to a wine sensory evaluation workshop in Geneva, OH. The premise of the workshop lied heavily on the aroma of wine. Primarily because the aroma of wine is biggest contributing factor to its perceived taste. We smelled numerous concentrated flavors from a wine sensory kit imported from France. My only objection to this French aroma kit was the aroma they claimed to be grass. The French must have pretty extravagant grass—and if they do, well, I guess that wouldn't surprise me.

Jon, Anna & Iza left for Hungary this week!

Greetings fellow wine consumers!

Personally, my wine consumption has increased in the last month due to my Sensory Evaluation course. Each week for my homework I am to go out and buy a specific type of wine to evaluate. This starts to add up to be a lot of wine for a single lady. Thankfully, my roommate is courteous and helps me finish my homework when it starts piling up.

Regarding the single lady issue: Jon, Anna & Iza headed off to Hungary on Tuesday. Before they left I asked them if they could bring me back (kidnap) a Hungarian husband. They will be over there for a month, so they should have time to pick one up, I'm sure he can squeeze into a suitcase.

I'm only almost half joking...

The Glass is Half Full!

Good Evening:                            Friday 3/18/16

Mary and I just got home this evening from Jackpot Junction Casino.  I am nothing of a gambler; I played black-jack for about half an hour until I lost my $20 bill as expected.  We were there to celebrate our youngest son Scott on his 30th birthday.  Last night the seven of us pigged out on crab legs.

I remember in the old days we would drink some really bad beer, such as Fox Deluxe, Arrowhead, Hauenstein, and etc.  We often had the standing joke that it was better to just pour the beer down thetoilet; instead of running it first through your body and then into the toilet.  The photo below shows how the casino may well be.

On the way home we detoured to Grandview Valley Winery, tasting and lunch of Pizzas.  It was a good visit.

This week I re-varnished the bar at the winery, it hadn’t been touched for over seven years.  I think it did really well for seven years of traffic.  It really shines now. On the new bar I am now working to get the side panels manufactured.  This will take some time.  I am also currently varnishing a new bottle rack for in the store. This one will hold almost eighteen cases.

Lastly, this cooler snowy weather is just fine for the grapes. See you this weekend and thank you for your time.

Don

Millner Wine <3's Food

This past week I made Lamb Pitas with Pistachio & Mint Pesto and paired it with Dága! I highly recommend picking up a bottle of Drága every time you make lamb. This barrel aged Marquette has an excellent body as well acidity to take your lamb dish to the next level. Truthfully, though this was an excellent meal, the uniqueness of last week's meal pairing of Róna with Chipotle Lime Salmon is definitely worth checking out!

Next Week:

I will be pairing our Frontenac Gris,
named Salier between these two:

Handmade African Jewelry & Crafts This Weekend!

Hello beautiful wine loving people,

I feel compelled to give you an update regarding the status of the missing curly mustache from Jon's face. It does appear that signs of life are indeed starting to surface from under his nose. As stated before, I will keep you posted with the latest mustache updates.

On another note, St Patrick's day is next week and I want to assure you that drinking green wine is just as fun as drinking green beer, if not MORE fun if it's Millner wine! Share your green glasses of Millner wine with us on social media tagged with #TheFunWinery to receive a free glass of wine, (some would call that self-made luck).

My plan is to just drink a lot of green wine in hopes it will make me lucky enough to win this car that my father entered me to win at Menards on Tuesday.

The Glass is Half Full!

Good Morning:

I have some good news to share with you.  Last fall before freeze-up I removed my goldfish from the patio pond and caged them sinking the cage into the big pond by the driveway.  With all this warm weather, on Tuesday I pulled the cage to the surface and goldfish flippering.  I didn’t know how they’d do stuck at the bottom all winter in solitary confinement. I started with two dozen, remaining a minimum of one dozen, maybe all of them.  You’ve heard on fish only having a 3 second memory, look at this “Three-second memory myth: Fish show they can remember things for up to five months, click here.

Being grandpa or Papowith Iza, I got a good laugh this week.  Iza will be nine yrs. old in May, but she is already working on becoming a teenager; must be a sign of the times.  The last few times she has stayed at our house, she refuses to eat meals at our house if she is going home shortly, the meals are terrible.  The food is fine, just wanting to assert her independence.

This week Jon was filtering wine being an hour late, Mary and Anna had a ladies night out to go to and Iza stayed with me at our house till Jon got done. Upon her arrival she announced that she wasn’t eating here, she and Jon would eat late, probably pizza.  What an opportunity, before Mary left and in front of Iza, I asked Mary if it was OK if I made a few T-bone steaks. I also commented to Iza that T-bone steaks are really good.  After Mary left Iza and I played two handed whist waiting for Jon to arrive.  After about 45 minutes Jon called and said that he was 10 minutes out. Then Iza announced that she could stay to eat with me.  Of course, this was my opportunity; your dad I think has already picked up the pizza.  Oh you have to go home. Iza accepted it and I then told her that next time we should plan  to barbeque steaks. (She has always like steak.)  In the end after Iza went home, I just had a summer sausage sandwich for my meal.  The fun part for me is giving her a teaching moment and she didn’t even know it.

Millner Wine <3's Food

Last week it was voted for me to pair the Chipotle Lime Salmon with Róna. I was a little nervous to take a leap of faith and rely on the instinct of my palate who was telling me "Róna will be a good pairing with the Chipotle Lime Salmon even though it is a fish dish". Since my palate is a woman, and women are always right, this pairing turned out to be absolutely phenomenal!

The acidity in Róna and its tart raspberry like notes balanced beautifully with the savory salmon, zesty lime and the chipotle zing.

Check out the recipe: Chipotle Lime Salmon

Alert: Missing Mustache

Our dearest newsletter reading patrons,

This week on Facebook I posted a picture of this man:

There has been some speculation in the comments on our Facebook post that Jon is taking an undercover job, someone even suggested that this man may very well be D.B. Cooper, not mustache-less Jon. We are not sure the exact cause for this incident; it might have been that Jon went through a mini identity crisis. He claims his reasoning for such an atrocious act is because he is going back to Hungary for a while and thought it would be too much maintenance over there while traversing the country.

I can assure you that we have put out an emergency alert for the curly mustache to return to it’s proper place. We will keep you updated in the coming weeks as to its return.

The Glass is Half Full!

Good evening:

Above I see that Andrea noted that Jon shaved off his mustache, I have something to add to this subject.  With his mustache removed did you notice that his nose double in length?  A regular Pinocchio and who is this young guy?  A while back Jon suggested that I should also grow out my mustache, it sure seems like a lot of work to me.  I think I’d have plenty of growth, should I do it?

I just returned from Hutchinson, purchased stain and varnish for the new bar.  I ran into a couple of our long time winery regulars from Hutchinson, I couldn’t resist it and sang them the “Sechs in a Bottle” song. Today I completed the bar top including inside andoutside rails.  The sides will be slow to assemble, I might stain and varnish the top that I have the time now.

Did you notice that I changed my titling above to “The Glass is Half Full”?  We do pour our glass of wine as 5 ounce of wine in a ten ounce glass.  With a well poured glass of wine, you do want some airspace in the glass for the aromatics to collect that you can also smell the wine.  And remember that with it half full you can drink twice as many.

With growing grapes you also have to always have the mentality that the glass is half full.  Right now it is too warm for late February and early March.  If the grapes awake too early and the buds open, we can lose our crop due to a spring frost.  As the weather is warm now instead of sub-zero, the grapes can start their process of awakening from the winter sleep too early.  But then with the global warming, maybe when they do open we won’t have a frost. (This is the glass half full attitude.)

It was really warm last Saturday!

Have to go, Mary wants to go  out for supper.

 Thank you for your time.

Don

Millner Wine <3's Food

As you know, we started a Pinterest page with different pinning boards for our wines. I currently have five of our wines listed and have a good start on different meals to pair with our wines.
See our Pinterest page here.

Your vote is needed:

Out of these two meals, which one should I make this week to show & tell you about next week?? Both of them I plan to pair with Rona.

Happy National Tell a Fairy Tale Day!

Happy Thursday ladies & gentlemen!

Last week was a pretty celebrated week in the alcohol industry. We had National Drink Wine Day and National Margarita Day! I'm behind on celebrating Margarita Day, but it's on my to-do list. Today is National Tell a Fairy Tale Day, so I thought I would share one of my favorites:
The Princess & the Pea

News adjustment: Last week we stated our bottling record was an average of 741 bottles per hour. It actually ended up being 715 bottles per hour. Maybe next time we'll reach 741!

What's your favorite meal?

Let us know what your favorite meal is to have with our wine and I'll add it to our Pinterest page! Click here to view our Pinterest page. Together, we can collect a whole cookbook of recipes that are delicious pairings with our wine!

We would love to hear some of your suggestions! Email a dish to me (Andrea) and I'll try it out with one of our wines and then let you all know how it goes :)

Don's Corner

Well you already read above that we had a mis-reporting of our new bottling record last week.  I calculated it at 741 bottles per hour, when I saw in the newsletter it listed at 714, I corrected it not knowing that Jon had made an error on how many hours we bottled.  So with his new hour count it then came out to 714.8, I did get Jon to agree to round up, hence 715.  But then, I told Jon that, just like the politicians do, if we repeat the 741 number often enough it will become the truth.  But then we are not politicians, so the new record is now 715.

My Mom’s funeral went really well last Friday and Saturday.  It was very much a Millner and Marshik reunion.  Jon enlisted me onto a wholesale tasting last Sunday evening; my voice was really scratchy from the weekend.  Hard to talk and sing, but I managed.

Andrea put in my bar work as photo of the week.  Right now I have a section of bar rail glued and in clamps, it is a “T” type connection.  I had some of this type of connection crack while clamped, this one made funny sounds while closing the clamps and oh I hope it isn’t cracked.  I won’t know until I can remove the clamps.  If it is I’ll have to start over on this piece and try to be smarter next time.  Trying to be smarter sometimes feel like a lost art.

Some days are like this!

Andrea the Wine Student

I wanted to show you guys what wine school looks like for me. Essentially I can sit on the couch curled up in a blanket wearing my bathrobe. My classroom is online; we hold lectures and discussions virtually. This is what my lecture hall looks like:

One thing that my instructor, Zoran has said is that each person is their own instrument, you taste what you taste. Tasting wine is your own experience and no one can take that from you.

So the next time a wine snob says you should be tasting tennis balls and cigars, and you're tasting rainbows and valentines, be at ease, nothing is wrong with you. You have every right to taste rainbows and valentines.

Thanks again for reading! And don't forget to send me your meal pairing ideas!

Love,
Andrea
